Located in the Kalahari Kingdom/Tiger Tails section of the Franklin Park Zoo, this project entailed a detailed evaluation of existing conditions and recommendations for revitalizing this 1960’s food service facility to better complement its hilltop location. The implemented design solution is inspired by African textile design – the existing pergola structure was restored and supporting columns painted with a palette of vibrant colors. The body of the two buildings were inspired by the color of Kalahari Desert sand, lending the building a more appropriate presence to the adjacent exhibit context.
