Overview
The Stone Zoo’s Animal Discovery center has a new home in the repurposed former elephant house. This building was transformed to accommodate a new learning center, including two discovery classrooms with hands-on exhibits, as well as live animal exhibits and a bee colony with direct tube access to the outdoors. The new ADC allows the zoo staff to conduct two separate learning activities at one time, and to host overnight events for young zoo enthusiasts.
Details
The nearly cubic, concrete construction of the old elephant house encloses a tall, double-height space with natural light coming from clerestory windows and skylights within the precast concrete tee roof. The exterior of the building was refurbished and painted with an angular pattern intended to de-emphasize the block form and support the zoo’s live “Birds of Prey” flight show situated directly outside.
